Joshua meets The Mighty Joshua!

Tokens of the Power of The Lord
¶ Vs. 1. When the Amorites and the Cannanites heard of Israel's God opening the Jordan river for them their "heart melted". When we are travelling with The Lord Paul said -
2 Corinthians 2:15 (KJV) 15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: In the previous verse, verse 14 it is clearly stated that this evidence is there because it is God that causes us to "triumph in Christ".

¶ By the Power of God the waters of Jordan were driven back, and it will be evident to those around us when we are walking with The Lord in resurrection Life. We can also trust like David did with rejoicing...  "Many shall see it and fear and put their trust in The Lord" [Psalm 40:3.] What a thrill that  others may  see the Lord in us and come to trust in Him! David prays in another place   Psalms 86:17 (KJV) 17 Shew me a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou, Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted me.

¶ In the early church of powerful witness, those around    "took knowledge that they (the Christians) had been with Jesus" [Acts 4:13.] The Lord have mercy and help us to know him more in such a real way that those around us "see no man save Jesus only" as Peter, James and John experienced on the Mount of Transfiguration. The lord perform by his life in us the call given to Isaiah ...

Arise Shine!

Isaiah 60:1 (KJV) 1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

¶ When the queen of Sheba came from afar to hear the wisdom of Solomon we read that when she saw all the glory and the wisdom of King Solomon   "there was no more spirit in her" and yet in us and through us "a greater then Solomon is here" [1Kings 10:5. Matthew 12:42.]

Gilgal - Reproach Rolled Away
¶ The ongoing of this power and evidence of the Lord in us is only possible as there is the dealings of the Lord upon our flesh and all of it's sinfulness and self centeredness and pride.
¶ Israel was carrying the reproach of Egypt - They lusted after the "flesh pots" of Egypt and turned their hearts away from the  Lord and worshiped the "Golden Calf" a symbol of one of the gods of Egypt and this stamp was upon them, of a weak people to take little account of; but now in crossing Jordan there is the evidence of a people raised up by the "high hand" of the God of Israel and so The Lord tells Joshua that now at Gilgal "the reproach of Egypt" will be "rolled away" and to Circumcise all the males in Israel that were not circumcised. Circumcision is the cutting away of "excess flesh" and was a token in Israel's flesh of God's Covenant with them as their God and they as His People to Love him with the wonderful result of finding Life.  [Deut. 30:6.]

¶ Peter said ...  we are happy if we are reproached for the name of Christ [1 peter 4:14] but also as in the case of Israel we can be reproached and judged for our faults and such reproach is avoided if we allow the Lord to deal out circumcision upon the "excess flesh" Adamic nature within us.

This "old Adamic nature is referred to as the "Old Man" and when we come to Christ this "old man" Praise the Lord is crucified with Him - Romans6:6 (KJV 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

This truth is wonderfully lived out as we look to Jesus and thus live by his life. If the "old man" was forever dispensed with (which happens when we are "absent from the body and present with the Lord") and wasn't a potentially active force to reckon with, Paul would not have given the instruction ..  Ephesians 4:22-24 (KJV) 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;  23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

You can't put off something that isn't there and while we are still in these bodies there is the capacity for every believer to exhibit something (whether severe or minor) of the "old man" ("which is corrupt according to deceitful lusts") instead of the "new man" in Christ. This "old man" in his nature operates within the realm of the body and the heart. The new man in Christ is in the Spirit which is in the believers spirit and is untouched by this "old (corrupt) man" and operates within the realm of the Spirit and the heart. This old Adamic nature is all about "the body" i.e., is flesh orientated and that is why Paul refers to this "old man" as having deceitful lusts which is the "lusts of the flesh". Now, circumcision is the work of the Spirit of God and this work takes place in the heart. As a believer allows this quickening, the excess flesh action that could take place in the heart is cut off and so Paul describes this action as circumcision. Romans2:29 (KJV) 29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

When our hearts are under the influence of the Spirit the "old man" nature of "excess flesh" is "cut off" and thus the believer is walking in an experience of true spiritual circumcision which is "that of the heart in the spirit".

This wonderful and simple truth is likewise expressed in Paul’s letter to the Ephesian Church. Ephesians3:16-19 (KJV) 16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth , and height; 19And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Notice that The Spirit is mentioned as the vehicle whereby Christ "dwells" in the heart; the word "dwell" means to fully occupy every place in the heart and when that happens Praise the Lord all excess flesh is "cut off" and the "new man" in Christ is operating in the full dimension of resurrection Life.

¶ Only this "new Man" in Christ may go forward from Gilgal to experience great gains of blessing and fruitfulness in the land of Promise! Look to Jesus, Hear his voice, be raised from the dead and from among the dead. Jesus has much for you; He knows you and loves you; Cast all your care upon Him.

Abundant Life in Christ.

¶ The children of Israel kept the passover at Gilgal, how precious is the rememberance of redemption and what a precious sence of "belonging" would have been in the hearts of Israel as they considered the great faithfulness of God in all their "wanderings" and many errors.
¶ The light wafer manna also ceased, (vs. 12.) as they began to discover already a yield of good things in the land. What abundant life is in Christ alone.

Glory is the strength for Victory

¶ Vs 13. It was at the point of being by Jericho that Joshua had a vision of the Lord: At the all important time of facing the "battle field" is when to see the Lord. Moses besought the Lord to reveal his Glory at a time of great burden (Exodus 33.) Joshua saw "a man" (Jesus "the son of man") with a sword in his hand: Gideon and his men cried "The Sword of The Lord and of Gideon" [Judges 7;20.] John in his imprisonment saw Jesus and his glory and a sharp twoedged sword coming out of his mouth [Rev. 1:16.]

¶ Joshua encounted the Mighty Joshua who provides "Jehovah Saved" Victories for every battle field experience. When John saw the Lord he "fell at his feet as dead" and before this same one in vs 14 Joshua "fell on his face and did worship".
¶ Worship before battle
always provides a Victory
cry at the end.
