Bible Study - Joshua

               Joshua Ch. 9.

           General Heading: Dangerous Mixture.

Flood of the Enemy. Vs. 1.

* The kings of the land gathered together as we read in verse 2 "to fight". The promise of the Lord is,   "... When the enemy shall come in like a flood the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him." [ Isaiah 59:19.] It wasn't just 1 King, it was a great tide of hostile opposition to bring about an end to Israel. We have a ferocious enemy that will stop at nothing to bring us down.   Ref. Pharaoh chasing Israel after they left Egypt.   [Exodus 15:9.] Q. Describe any Enemy tactics.

Tricked and Pricked. Vs. 3-6.

* The Lord gave Israel a warning that any Nation that remained in the land of their inheritance would be pricks in their eyes and thorns in their sides and that they would end up suffering the very judgement the Lord had intended upon the wicked works of those Gentile nations.     [Numbers 33:55-56. Deuteronomy 20:10-18.]
Q. By simply allowing the Gibeonites to remain as servants; how would that incur the judgement the Lord had warned about in Numbers 33:56?

Outward Appearance. Vs. 4-5.

* The Gibeonites put on an outward show, It is important to be clear where the Lord looks ...   1 Samuel 16:7..... for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. How real is our need to "keep our heart with all diligence" looking for spiritual reality in the case of involvement with others. The Lord's instruction to Samuel was vital in being led of the Spirit in the anointing of David as King of Israel.

Dangerous Mixture.

* The Gibeonites said "make a league with us". There is a lot of danger in associations and alliances particularly with the unsaved and we are encouraged in the Word to stay clear of such ..   2 Corinthians 6:14 (KJV) 14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? Some indirect "leagues" in the World may be unavoidable, such as required employee union membership. * Beware!

The Name of The Lord. Vs. 9.

* The Gibeonites heard of the Name of the Lord, and how important and what a privilege to be a banner for The Lord Jesus Christ. Paul labeled "carnal", rival representation of anyone else or any other name.   1 Corinthians 3: 3-5. Even passive alliance representation can blurr who we really belong to and who we serve. Perhaps the Jewish folk at Gibeon could end up being labeled by others as, "Gibeonites".  The Christian has no other name to bear other than the name of Jesus.  Acts 4:12. "..None other name under Heaven"

The Voice of the Lord. Vs 14.

Psalms 28:1 (KJV) 1   Unto thee will I cry, O Lord my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit. It could be summarized that in such a "pit" one could be labeled, "Pitiful". Though we are, in our neediness "pitiful", we should not have the appearance that we are stuck there but rather that we have come to the "surface" and are rejoicing!  Hearing the Voice of the Lord RAISES us from the DEAD!

Counsel At the Mouth of the Lord. Vs. 14.

* Getting advise from the Lord issues in LIFE! i.e.  John 6:63 (KJV) 63 ...the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. Psalm 19 says "The voice of the Lord makes the hinds to calve"; which is LIFE! Seeking the Lord is tied in with counsel at his mouth.  Psalms 105:5 (KJV) 5 Remember his marvelous works that he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth; Seeking the Lord is in vain if we are not ready for the "judgements" he speaks through his Word on any issue.

Fame of the Lord. Vs. 9.

* Paul was captivated by Christ on the Damascus road with the Shekinah Glory! All of a sudden Paul is devastated with the reality that Jesus is the ALL powerful Glory of Jehovah God! now that is having someone FAMOUS disagree with you, BUT Jesus soon captured his heart with His great love and Paul became a willing and "sold out" prisoner of Jesus Christ. We have been redeemed by fame and glory who gave all for us; how could we not be content to be part of such "Fame" and Glory which is all yet to be revealed.

Princes of the Congregation. Vs. 18.

* The Princes (or elders) in Israel come under fire. It was Joshua that made the deal with the Gibeonites Vs. 15 but the "princes" cop the flack. This incident  is a good encouragement for us to esteem them which are over us in the lord and to pray for the Lord's headship in the local assembly. The word "princes" in the Hebrew contains the suggestion of the substance of "Vapour" or "rising mist"!! The substance of every minister is such and so with us all, but to esteem highly for their works sake is the Lord's Word. [1 Thess. 5:13.]

Beguiled! Vs. 22.

2 Corinthians 11:3 (KJV)  3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. The enemy of our joy and good has the same tatic today that he had with Eve and that was to "dazzle her with science" turn the Word of God upside down, inside out and burn her brain with fiz. It is simple! Christ Loved you and "gave himself" for you. Jump for Joy!! Trust - Seek - and Follow. Be persuaded of this great love that won't let you go!

Jesus Is Reaching for you.

The Lord Bless.

The Following are some related verses in full.

Deuteronomy 20:10-18 (KJV)
10 When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.
11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.
12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:
13 And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:
14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.
15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.
16 But of the cities of these people, which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:
17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee:
18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the Lord your God.

Numbers 3:55-56 (KJV)
55 But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.
56 Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do unto you, as I thought to do unto them.

1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV)
7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
