Bible Study - Joshua

¶ These Study notes are only intended to provide "a crumb from the Masters table" and if that be the joyful find then there is cause on our part to be thankful to the Lord. There is much that can flow on from the "seed" thoughts. The referenced verses at the bottom of the study can provide a springboard into a greater  expansion of the precious truths briefly touched on.

Joshua Ch. 18-19.

Completness at Shiloh

** Jesus is your Shiloh. 18:1.**

¶ "Shiloh" means "tranquility". Oxford Dictionary: "calm serene unruffled, not agitated, as preserved tranquil state of mind." Jesus is THE SHILOH. Genesis 49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Though as we walk this earthly clod of many raging storms, Jesus is our Peace no matter how the storm may rage! Do You have peace about everything, such as your present circumstances or past sin and failures? Hand ALL over to Jesus and you will be at SHILOH!

** The Tabernacle at Shiloh. 18:1. **

¶ The House of God is called a "house of Peace" [Haggai 2:9] Israel found peace at Shiloh; peace in the fight. Peace is practical: Paul stated to the Philippian believers peace doesn't happen by being careful but by being prayerful and in everything acknowledge the Lord, commit all to him with Thanksgiving and the "peace of God which passeth all understanding will keep your heart and mind through Christ Jesus" [ Philippians 4:6-7.]

**  The Land Subdued. 18:1. **

¶ Peace means Victory; that's why we are given the dynamic encouragement that "The God of Peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly" as we are wised up to that which is "good and simple concerning evil" [Romans 16:19-20] During the process of reaching Shiloh, the children of Israel had learned much wisdom (concerning good and evil) in the quest for blessing and were in faith, peace, wisdom and obedience and thus the land was subdued in VICTORY!

** Slackness means Emptiness. 18:3. **

¶ Remember in 13:1 Joshua is well stricken in years and the Lord spoke to Joshua that there was still much land to be possessed and now Joshua is getting the point that there is "slackness" and he is compelled to instruct to "give out" from each tribe only three men. Slackness is our natural disposition in spiritual things: The soul shuddering words of the Lord to the two on the Amos road "O fools and slow of heart to believe" awoke their hearts with a fresh longing to understand and their hearts caught fire! Joshua didn't ask for much; give the Lord and His Word some time!

** Check out the Riches. 18:4. **

¶ Interesting phrases - "give out" "Rise" "Go through the land" "describe it" Collectively it could be said that the word to cover it, would be "SEEK". One of the most wonderful directives given by the Lord is the one in Matthew 7:7-12. "Seek and ye shall find" with the very important background action that qualifies the blessed result and that is to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. How we treat others can be very detrimental to how the Lord is able to deal with us and give us good things when we give others a short deal. The Lord gave Solomon "largeness of Heart".

 ** Great Priesthood Inheritance. 18:7. **

¶ What greatness was bestowed upon the Levites: Their portion was to minister to the Lord, to know His will according to the Law and minister the will of God to the people and in all of that The Lord Himself would be their Inheritance! [Ref. Numbers 18:20.] In Christ every believer is "joined to the Lord" and is part of the Body of Christ: could you ever say to your arm I have no need of you? We need each other and so much are we a part of The Lord and one another that The Head (Christ) cannot say "I have no need of thee" [1 Cor.12:21] How amazing! A Great Mystery [Ephesians 5:32.]

 **************************************

** Dan - Fight for more. 19:47. **

¶ In the divided portions, what Dan had was "too little" - "Leshem" was in their sights. They went for the "fight" and Possessed it. Leshem means "A Gem"! Your Inheritance in Jesus IS A GEM! Don't let this Gem slip! Declare war on everything that displaces Christ from being ALL! All in this World is temporal all in Christ is Eternal. [2 Cor. 4:18.] Whatever you have in Jesus that is the blessing of His goodness is "too little" there is much more "great spoil".  [2 Samuel 3:22.] Press forward for such rich eternal gains.

** Portion among them. 19:49. **

¶ When Israel had gained the full extent of their inheritance, then they gave to Joshua an inheritance "among them." You could imagine how rich a prized portion that would have been, to be in the "midst" among the people he so longed after, to receive a full reward: Such is the Lords longing to have a Rich Portion among us as Jacob prophesied          "Till Shiloh come and UNTO HIM shall the gathering of the People be" [Gen. 49:10.]

******************************

** Before the Lord. 19:51. **

¶ "In Shiloh before the Lord" was the blessed state of Israel after many years (approx. 24) of conflict and discipline of the Lord. "Redemption has two parts: "out" and "into"           Ref. Deut. 6:23." [Scofield]  What Giants we face as David did in the many perilous conflicts of coming "into" Spiritual Maturity and fullness of the blessing. [Romans 15:29.] Here at Shiloh the hearts and minds of the children of Israel are "before the Lord" strong and knowing that The Lord is "a man of war"                     [Ex. 15:3.]  with mighty  power to bring them into a GREAT INHERITANCE! Take Courage Christian & go on!

        * *  I Don't Know Why Jesus Loved Me. **
I don't know why Jesus loved me
I don't know why He cared
I don't know why He sacrificed His life
Oh, but I'm glad, so glad He did
Where would I be if Jesus didn't love me?
Where would I be if Jesus didn't care?
Where would I be if He hadn't sacrificed His life
Oh, but I'm glad, so glad He did

Jesus Loves You and

Is Reaching for You

God Bless.
