                  Joshua Ch. 20-21

       Promised and Faithful

The Lord speaks to His Servant. 20:1.

¶ The book of Joshua is full of the Lord speaking! To enter into the will of God there is a need to be directed: A "loose Cannon" in the work of the Lord is a problem and dangerous. Here Joshua is no "loose Cannon" - The Lord speaks to him. Right at the outset of the promised Land campaign Joshua exhibts a love for the Lord, surrender and worship. Ref. Joshua 5:14. There is no campaign but just "Pain" when as Christians, we function on "presumption" and know very little of the Lord revealing Himself to us and of the joy and living experience of hearing His Voice. Servants are Listeners!

The Servant to Speak. 20:2.

¶ Joshua spoke what the Lord told him to speak. The Lord spoke to Paul on one occasion "Be not afraid but speak and hold not thy peace" [Acts 18:9.] What a privilege to speak from the Lord, even as the following instruction; "If any man speak let him speak as the oracles of God"! [1 Peter 4:11.] It is not a light thing to speak "as from the Lord" and we are encouraged to speak words that "minister grace" and also the sound that is given out, should be like a "clear Trumpet sound" [Acts 20:32. 1 Cor. 14:38.]  "Words of truth and Soberness" [Acts 26:25.]

Refuge 20:2.

¶ The Lord knows all the destructions of the human race. The World is full of destruction and is built on a platform (apart from the grace of God) of destruction! This World is designed and formatted by a grief thief - The Devil. This World breaths despair and brokeness in every direction and as Israel in the normal routine of life would strike disaster and would need a place of "refuge" so Jesus is the one to flee to for refuge.  Jesus is the one who put everything in Adam that makes him "tick" and He is the only one who truly understands and knows all the brokeness and can mend it all!

High Priest - Refruge Release. 20:6.

¶ In the city of refuge the man slayer would be released from his sin completely upon the death of the High Priest. Joshua had High Priest authority in Israel [Ref. Num. 27:18-22.] and with such governmental power there is a great type of Christ presented in the whole book of Joshua. By this High Priest authority Israel came into the fulness of their inheritance and it is by the intercession power of Christ that we are brought more and more into God's all for us. [Hebrews 7:25.] And it is by the death of Jesus that we are released from the guilt and condemnation of sin and come into ALL the benefits and HUGE inheritance of this NEW TESTAMENT [see Hebrews 9:14-15.]

Hebron - High Priest & Refruge. 21:13

¶ Indeed as already mentioned in study Ch. 13-14 [ref. notes Ch.14. Vs.13] Hebron is a special place; David was anointed King in Israel here and also this city (with it's suberbs) is given to the sons of Aaron which includes the high Priest (Eleazar) to be a city of refuge. Hebron means "association" or "fellowship". Jesus our great High Priest [see Hebrews 3:1] has brought us into fellowship with the Father and Himself. [Ref. 1 John 1:3.]  and in this fellowship with the Lord there is great refuge. [Ref. Hebrews 13:5-6.] Like David, Fellowship with the Lord is the only way forward in His great plans for us.

The Lord gave. 21:43

¶ How great are the gifts of God! Here is the truth with Israel, that it was only as  "The Lord gave" that "they Possessed"! And so is the same for us; what blessings are enjoyed when Heaven is the source! What emptiness is provided by our own resources. The Lord cause our hearts to joyfully settle with the great reality that "He that spared not his own son but delivered Him up for us all, how shall he not with Him freely give us all things" [Romans 8:32.] As the hymn goes "Everything is in Christ and Christ is everything". Looking unto Jesus in everything.

 All the Land. 21:43.

¶ Israel possessed ALL that the Lord had promised; they lacked nothing! This "allness" is such for the Christian. It is indeed striking, the illustration the Lord gave to the disciples of the greatness of our "part" with Him in John 13. Peter was told "If I wash thee not thou hast no part with me".  The part every Christian has with Jesus is Gigantic because we are "part" of Him: Thats why Paul declares with great boldness to the sin plundered Corinthian Church, why do you choose the poverty remains of sin when "ALL things are yours" in Christ?  [1 Cor. 3:21] Washed + washed more = A part + more part!

 The Lord gave Rest. 21:44.

¶ Praise the Lord that there always will remain a rest for the people of God. [Hebrews 4:9.]  Whatever action of the Lord's goodness or interfering action on our part; there is the gracious call of the Lord to come to Him - To "cease" from our own fruitless works and find "rest" and "fruitfulness" in knowing Him more and the power of His resurrection. Abraham's body and Sarah's was raised from the dead and O what fruitfulness and blessing was the result! In contrast what trouble and strife was reaped and still being reaped upon Israel by Abraham's own works!

 Caused to Triumph. 21:44.

¶ Very clearly, all the glory goes to the Lord because He gave the rest and He delivered all their enemies "into their hand". We have an arch enemy and only by the power of God can we prevail. David said in Psalm 91:3. "Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler and the noisome pestilence". What wonders of grace the Lord in his mercy, sources to get us through, whether it is a "horrible miry pit" or the enemy, the Lord can see to it - "Jehovah-jireh".  As we hand over all to Him we experience what Paul declared - We are caused "to Triumph in Christ" [2 Corinthians 2:14.]

No Failure of any Goodness. 21:45.

¶ How this High Estate of Israel reminds us of, "the end of the Lord" (James 5:11.) with Job of great blessing though there was much patience needed, till his heart understood his utter pitifulness and the Lord's sublime greatness. The Lord's great love and goodness toward you cannot fail though there be a "chasm" of heart rending lessons to learn.  There "failed not ought" of great goodness for Israel with Joshua and how much more shall there NOT FAIL unspeakable Goodness with Jesus the Mighty Joshua!

Jesus is Reaching for You!

God Bless
