              Joshua Ch. 23.

       Theme: Glories and Warnings!

Long time Rest. 23:1.

¶ This long time rest for Israel is what the Lord gave. There is long term Rest for the believer as what is desired and what is initiated is of the Lord. What we establish, desire and initiate the Lord will bring to death as he did in the case of David at Ziklag. We are invited to "sup" with the Lord concerning all our desires and heart aches and His promise is to bring us to His great table of grand supper goodness that words fail to describe! A heart open to the Lord is a heart that shall "greatly rejoice" [Psalm 21:1.]

 Striken in Age. 23:1.

¶ You may not be well stricken in age or you maybe, but the main point is, how far have you come with the Lord? Where are you currently? Joshua was well stricken in years but what glorious things The Lord showed him and did with him!  Joshua met the "Lord mighty in battle" with a "sword drawn in his hand" just before the conquest of the land of Canaan began. [5:13.] Joshua spoke and we are told "The Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man" [10:14.] The Lord deliver us from wasted time and like with Joshua fill our days for His Glory!

 Joshua Called. 23:2.

¶ How eager we can be, to receive a call that we have won the position applied for or that we have qualified to receive a distinction award for some achievement! What greater thrill can there be, than to be as Paul said, "the called of Jesus Christ" [Romans 1:6.] Joshua called all Israel, and the elders, Judges and officers together to instruct and guide, and here is a pattern that (as in Israel) the local Church "oversight" and individuals are to be under Christ alone - our Heavenly Joshua. And what a calling - "called to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ". [2 Thess. 2:14.]

Because of You! 23:2.

¶ Joshua declares "because of you" the Lord has worked and done great things. What a great encouragement that is for us to be more towards the Lord than trying to be something towards man. If we are "Rich toward God" [Luke 12:21] Then the Lord has grounds to work those riches among men and include us in such great Kingdom works! This is His working as revealed in the conclusion of The Lord's talk on "Riches" in Luke 12:31-32. "Seek first" (Riches toward God) and all will be added along with The Kingdom as well. What unsearchable Riches!

Turn not Aside. 23:6.

Vs. 3. "Fought for you" Refer: Notes Joshua 12.
Vs. 5. "The Lord shall expel" Refer: Notes Joshua 13
Vs. 5. "Promise and Possessions" Ref: Notes Ch. 1,8 & 11.
Vs. 6. "Courageous" Refer: Notes Joshua Ch. 1.
Vs. 6. "Keep and do" Refer: Notes Joshua Ch. 22.

¶ Joshua outlines that the issue is perilous that Israel "turn not aside" and this peril is also very real to the Christian if we "go after" any other attraction! Jesus is ALL [Col. 3:11.] Nothing must take the 1st. place in heart or Pursuit; as the hymn goes ... "Once it was the blessing, now it is the Lord"

Reign in Life. 23:9.

Vs. 7. "Neither serve them." Ref. Notes Joshua Ch. 9.
¶  The strong have fallen, Joshua reminds them: Because the Lord fought for them; none were able to stand against them. This reigning power likewise is for us as we receive "abundance of Grace and the gift of righteousness, we shall reign in life by one Jesus Christ" [Romans 5:17.] Sin can only be beaten by Jesus Christ and nothing can stand before Him. To "Reign" or "rule" in life by the power of God is only through Christ. Christ is the wisdom of God and the Power of God and He is made unto us "Righteousness" [1 Cor 1:24 & 30.]

The Fighter and Fight of Faith. 23:10.

¶ One to chase a thousand! Now that is power: This illustration of Joshua's promise from the Lord for Israel provides an understanding of the injunction of Paul .. "Having done all to stand, stand therefore..." [Eph. 6:13-14.] We stand by faith and the great and mighty fighter chases the "thousand" that we have no chance to defeat! How wonderful that we have such a powerful Victor that doesn't despise our utter weakness but is for us, with all the forces of Heaven in a mighty defense. What redeeming Love is over us and for us in the fight!

Take Good Heed. 23:11-12.

¶ There is a good clue in the phrase "good heed" - The suggestion is that it is "good" for "self" if we give heed to love the Lord. Indeed it is a "good heed" to love and experience the great love of Christ - "We love Him because He first Loved us" [1 John 4:19.] Self doesn't know what's good for itself!

Snares and Traps. 23:13.

¶ It seems that the snares and traps become more insidious and threatening the more we "apprehend" what the Lord has for us. David found this to be sadly true but declared "Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler ..." [Ps. 91:3.]

The Good Shepherd is ALL Good! 23:14.

¶ Moses was told when he asked to see the Glory of the Lord - "I will make all my goodness to pass before thee". [Exodus 33:19] The goodness of this good Shepherd has LAYERS OF GLORY IN IT! The prophet Zechariah declares the same - "For how great is His Goodness how great is His Beauty" [Zechariah 9:17.] Here Joshua also says that he goes "the way of all the Earth" and we also await our time if the Lord tarries. The Lord give us grace as Paul said, to count not our life dear unto our self but to finish our course from Him with Joy. [Acts 20:24]

Loss? David Recovered All. 23:16.

¶ Joshua is pronouncing a prophetic future and what sadness there is, as indicated in the picture of the land divisions of Joshua's time and the great loss to Israel in this present time. In Romans 15:4 Paul points to the  comfort of the scriptures as we read the spiritual battles; the gains and the losses and how there can be recovery as we turn to the Lord with our whole heart and learn to fear our foolishness and in everything Live in Him.
