in a stale doctrinal knowledge of his love

in a living experience! <<

Where can be found clear directions to so experience the great love of Christ?

Paul shared such with the Church at Ephesus.

Ephesians 3:14-19 (KJV)

14 "For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God."

* 1.) "The riches of his glory". *

There are no greater riches than the riches of his Glory!

Seeying the Glory of God makes one rich indeed.

Moses "counted the reproach of Christ greater riches than all the treasures of Egypt" [Hebrews 11:26.] and he eventually saw the unveiled Glory of God that made his face to shine! [Exodus 34:30.]
Where there is any self interest and passion in the things of the world or even in the things of God there will be no Glory. God's glory comes only to the humble ground of a man with his shoes off! That's how it all began for Moses to eventually become a shining servant of God with the glory of God on his face. [Exodus 3:5.]

Self gain and self glory is how the human race began it's decent into hell! That was the first ploy of the Devil to Adam and Eve!

"God does know that in the day that you eat thereof, you will become as God, level with him! and he doesn't want that. He wants you kept, cut down to the minimum" [Genesis 3:5. GPH paraphrased]

There are many aspects of the Glory of God:-

Glorious high throne. [Jeremiah 17:12.]

Glorious voice. [Isaiah 30:30.]

Glorious Name. [Psalm 72:19.]

The glory of God will reach

down to man, not up to him!

wonderfully, will reach down to great depths of lowliness as with the great statements and revelation of Hannah .....

"He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S, and he hath set the world upon them". [1 Samuel 2:8.]

This glory is not half hearted toward you and me.

* 2.) "Strengthened with might by his Spirit".

Our resignation from self and yieldingness to the Lord is our stubborn problem.

We need to be strengthened to give way and yield our all to Christ. We may sincerely try our very best to be a yielded believer but dismal failure is a common experience. So Paul says, first I pray that you may be strengthened to yield "that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith."

But ...

We need to see the glory to "be strengthened"!

Jacob was driven to despair, just like we can be driven to a burdened place of anguish through various trials and troubles. But when Jacob saw the great extent of wagons and provisions come to him from Joseph in Egypt, he "revived".

"And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived". [Genesis 45:27.]

The more we see the great glory of Christ from a humbled, lowly, on our face position, not an intellectual analysis position, the more we are "strengthened" with might in our spirit by the Spirit of God to happily yield our all to Christ, who is our glory and the "lifter up of our head". [Psalm 3:3.]

* 3.) "That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith."

A person may "live" in a house with 15 rooms but only dwell in 3 rooms.

Christ lives in every believer, but every Christian needs to be strengthened by a vision of his glory in his spirit by the Spirit of God. Such revelation happily enables a yieldedness to the Lord dwelling in all (15 rooms) and fully occupying every area of our hearts; having full possession of our life!

* 4.) "That ye being rooted and grounded in love."
So important is this matter of love.

Anything without love is without God!

For "God is love." [1 John 4:8.]
O yes! many there be which are going to hell but not by the will of God, and not without the love of God, but by their own will to be without the love of God! [2 Peter 3:9.]

There is much wavering if we are not "rooted and grounded in his great love!

Where the roots of any plant or bush are, will determine it's outcome.

Poor soil, results in malformation and sometimes the appearance can be distorted and grotesque! There exists some ugly Christianity!

How wonderful, that, when Christ "dwells" (ie, occupies every area of our hearts) we are engaged in a "love feast"!

This "love feast" (the meaning of 'agape') is found in John's gospel:-

John 14:21-23 (KJV)
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

O, may God help our feeble hearts to be "rooted and grounded" in such a 'love feast'!

John obviously experienced and recorded such, for us also to experience more and more.

Look at those words! This is a 'love feast' between the father and the son, and the object and occassion is to bring you and me into all that it means!

Truly, David touches on this greatness in Psalm 139 and says it is too wonderful for him to comprehend!

He points out, that the thoughts that God has toward him is "more than the sand" [Psalm 139:1.] and not the sand on one beach, but all the sand in existence, on all the beaches of the World!

This love feast between the father and the Son is about all of that! The father contemplates and reviews on the possibilities of our present spiritual station, and the Son 'intercedes' for our receiving "more grace" and experiencing to the full all such purposes of great blessing!

Let us take to heart such wonder of the love of God toward us and rejoice that we are called to participate in such a calling of his grace!

Dear believer - Look straight ahead to Jesus, and as Paul said (in conclusion) after the great chapter (13) on Love in 1 Corinthians 14:1.

"Follow and pursue after love as if fleeing from a tsunami and in comparison simply walk, as it were, after spiritual gifts" [GPH paraphase.]

Our great pursuit should be the wonder and unfolding of this love feast that Jesus spoke of in John 16. Such promises are absolutely immense!

Have you ever wondered, what could be the discussion topics at the throne of the father with Jesus at the "right hand of the majesty on high"?

If this love feast has been going on for eternity, (Jeremiah 31:3.) at what magnitude are the thoughts, that are toward us, and how fitting are David's words in Psalm 139!

No wonder David exclaimed - "O love the Lord all ye his saints ....." [Psalm 31:23.]

Ever believer that is not intrinsically "rooted and grounded in love" is engaged in an offset position which may carry into the stale (as in the article heading) and intellectual comprehension of the love of God.

Everything about the Godhead springs out from what the father and the son are; and that is Love!

There are many doctrines and much spiritual understanding that is seriously 'offset' among the saints of God, because of mal-adjustment to the love of God. If you have a good understanding of someone's capacity to love, then you will have a good understanding of what they would say and do in many situations. Love is a strong and controlling force, which pulls everything within it's pure borders.

As the phrase puts it - (in reverse) "you may be able to comprehend spiritual things properly if you are rooted and grounded in love" [GPH paraphase.]

A person with only intellectual tenors of love can have wide borders of 'anything goes' and skip over sin with ease! As we grow in the love of Christ sin excuses become harder.

"Charity (Love) rejoiceth not in iniquity ...." [1 Corinthians 13:6.]

O how much there is about this "love of Christ" [2 Corinthians 5:14.]

Galatians 2:20 (KJV)
20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

From this lofty statement of Paul and the last sentence, we get the picture, that 'love' and 'self' cannot co-exist. Where sin is, self is at large!

* 5.) "May be able to comprehend the breadth and length ..."

Without this "love of Christ" we can only attain to be "clouds without water". A profession without possession!

A good intention, but flat extension!

Excellent theory that only makes weary!

Speaking about Christ, John said .....

...... "And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." [John 1:5.]

How wonderful that "darkness" cannot comprehend the glory of Christ nor the believer that is intent to "follow after (his) love" [1 Corinthians 14:1.]

Darkness can comprehend and encroach upon the spiritual position, doctrine and life of any believer that is not "rooted and grounded in love".

How urgent is this matter to "Comprehend with all saints the breadth and length ...." today, in this "lukewarm" historical era, of "the Church, which is his body"! [Ephesians 1:22-23.]
How awful that there can be operations of darkness that can comprehend (sieze) upon, and arrest  (even unknowingly) areas of our spiritual walk with the Lord. Such interference of the enemies work of darkness, thus renders us falling short of entering into the Lord's full plan and wonderful purposes.

* 6.) "And to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge .."

Why the climax focus of this love being "the love of Christ"?

The occupation of the Holy Spirit with our spirit is a total orientation with Christ!

"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you."
[John 16:13-15.]

His glory - His grace - His resurrection - His love.

Knowing this "Love of Christ" is to experience his love to tears, and surpasses mere intellectual knowledge of his love.

>> Supplement. <<

Had to add the following because of the very precious relationship of Christ and the Church (in respect of this theme of "love") portrayed in "The song of Solomon".

++ The preeminance of love. ++

It is beautifully striking that the opening desire of the Shulamite bride is:-

"Let him kiss me .... for thy love is better than wine". [SS 1:2.]

Isn't it true, that a great longing of the human heart is to be loved? and in particular from the one whom we love very dearly? The heart can yearn for that more than anything!

Well, the Lord's love for you and me cannot be measured and yet how much do we 'know' this love "which passeth knowledge"?

++ Love measured in a kiss. ++

No theory here! but she qualifies her expectation of such affectionate love with the words - "for thy love is better than wine". Herein is the mystery of experiencing his love.

Wine has the power to turn sorrow into mirth, [Psalm 104:15] and is one of the most powerful influences of the physical senses to give pleasure.

We cannot experience this "love that passeth knowledge" if we are dragging our heels in some carnal mud, some worldly desire, some fleshly pursuit! A pastime of soul gripping attention grabbing! Some delight of the senses in the realm of the physical.

++ Prerequisite of his love. ++

Her desire in the kiss was a lot more than the physical contact. That is expressed in verse 4 - "The upright love thee".

Uprightness with the Lord is paramount in every aspect of spiritual growth.

If you love ten pin bowling, invite the Lord right into the bowling alley, and we see then, how his love turns every case into an eternal joy, instead of a temporal fizz of nothing!

This Shulamite maid was an upright woman. No pretence with her. She loved Solomon and he occupied the full extent of her heart.

This "Love of Christ" beats hands down any and every temporal and physical 'sense' 'pleasure' 'thrill' or drug!

How wonderful that this book (The song of Solomon) which in its qualified spiritual parallel is concerning Christ and his church or bride; begins with love and permeates the whole.

Note the great heights of Romans 8 and the grand climax of "nothing shall be able to seperate us" from this love begins with the great challenge -

"Who shall seperate us from the love of Christ? ..."

"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
[Romans 8:35-39.]

The Father is only revealed through the son and thus the emphasis of the Spirit and the Word is the Son: and our relationship to him causes us to rejoice and glory in our loving Heavenly Father who is only known through the son!

* 7.) "And be filled with all the fulness of God.

Surprise! Surprise!

Many think that entering into the all glorious fulness of God, can only begin with some open and Heavenly manifestation of the Spirit, miraculous, glorious, public and dramatic!

But - No!

The fullness of God is Christ!

"The brightness of his Glory and the express image of his person" [Hebrews 3:3.]

We cannot come into any fulness of God apart from our relationship to his son.

Jesus made that clear in his statement to Phillip -

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." [John 14:6.]

The deepening of our fellowship with Jesus as our way, our truth, and our life, ushers in the all consuming experience of his great love and contained within that is all the fullness of God!

The fullness of God is not sourced within cold hard facts but sourced in his love!

"And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God" [Ephesians 3:19.]

Less experience of the love of Christ, less fullness of God.

More experience of the love of Christ, the more the experience of the fullness of God.

Now, dear believer, be looking to Jesus the author and perfector of your faith. Trusting in him to be brought into all the unsearchable riches, that the Father has stored up for you "in Christ". All is according to this wonderful love feast of the Father and the son, planned for you before the foundation of the world!

The Lord BLESS. He does the very BEST!
