Home Great Works!

T. Austin Sparks - Messages.

"The Works of The Lord are Great,

sought out of all them that have

                                 pleasure therein" [Psalm 111:2.]

This Promise is an exciting one because, as the Word says in another place,  "He only doeth wondrous things" [Psalm 72:18.]

How wearisome it is to try and think, how we could do "Good Works" for The Lord!

The Lord has said  "Not by might nor by power but by My Spirit sayeth The Lord" [Zechariah 4:6.]

It could be asked - Isn't the Christian meant to be one that does good works? Doesn't The Bible say that "Faith without works is dead?" [James 2:20.] Yes, the christian has entered into The Great Workshop of a Mighty King, he or she hasn't been given a shed and told to go and do something "neat" for The Lord! Yes "Faith without works is dead", but when something happens by "Faith" then it is not you that has done it but the person that you believed in, to do it has done it!

Like George Muller who without milk for the orphanage breakfast proceeded to ask  for The Lord's provision and thank Him for it and presently there was a knock at the door with an enquirey from the local milkman, could the orphanage use some milk as the milk cart had a broken wheel and  the milk load had to be unloaded! - "The Works of The Lord are Great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein" How beautiful it is when we see The Lord and Heaven's blessing in operation in our circumstances, Ellie my wife had read every book she could get her hands on about Geore Muller  because of the great encouragement of this man of faith who sought the Lord and experienced - "The Works of The Lord are Great" by many infallible proofs.

Dear brother and sister unload your heart and everything in it onto The Lord; as a matter of fact The Word encourages us to  "Cast your burden upon The Lord and He shall sustain thee" [Psalm 55:22.] Cease from your own works as we read in Hebrews 4:9-10.  "There remaineth therefore a rest to the People of God. For he that is entered into his rest hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His."

It is crucial for us to understand this very important reality even as the scribes and Pharisees were told clearly when they came to Him with the question  "What might we do that we might work the works of God" and Jesus answered "This is The Work of God that ye might Believe on Him whom He hath sent" [John 6:29.] Believe on Jesus that He is YOUR LIFE and that He has wonderful and eternal plans and "works" to do in you by His RESURRECTION Life, as he did for Abraham when his body and Sarah's was "now dead" and it was IMPOSSIBLE for them to have a child and yet God did it and demonstrated to Abraham and Sarah that God's Blessing cannot be manufactured by man, it is His Glory to do it and His Love for us, revealed  in it.

The Lord loves you and cares for you and the thrill is He wants to do for you and in you and through you His "wonderful works" as the Psalmist says  "O that men would Praise The Lord for His goodness and for His wonderful works to the children of men" [Psalm 107:8,15,21,31.]

In that great chapter 2 of Ephesians we are told that  "By Grace are ye saved, through Faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast" [Ephesians 2:8-9.]  Now right here we go from one Wonder to another, the first wonder being that we are saved "by Grace" and totally his work and the second wonder is indeed a spiritual "doosey"...

....that explodes  in Verse 10 of Ephesians chapter 2 ....  "For we are HIS WORKMANSHIP Created in Christ Jesus unto Good Works which God hath before ordained that we should WALK IN THEM" [Ephesians 2:10.] Notice that the emphasis is "Walk in" NOT DO these "Good Works" because they are God's works and His "Workmanship" and it is ALL "IN CHRIST".

How marvellous dear brother and sister that The Lord so loves us to not only save us from eternal disaster and ruin but has prepared fully to set us in an arrangement of His "Wonderful Works" and as one brother in our fellowship would say... Glory! The phrase "that we should walk in them" is so vital in the text of The King James version of The Bible because these works are works that ONLY THE LORD CAN DO! and we by resurrection Life in Christ "walk in"  these "good works" not DO them!

This Resurrection Life that we need to experience more and more is simply continuing to, as Paul said,  "That I may know Him (Christ)" [Philippians 3:10.] and out of that flows the Mighty River of Resurrection Life and the beautiful resultant works of His Grace.

Jesus loves You.

God Bless
